Abstract

The Timberjack 745 single-grip head also comes in a new multi-stem version, whose unique design lets it rapidly fell and process more than one stem at a time without significant compromises in terms of work quality and ease of use. In October 1998 and February 1999, FERIC conducted two productivity and quality studies with this head mounted on a Timberjack 608 carrier during an operational trial by a Charlevoix (Que.) contractor. The results of the study showed that the head's multi-stem capability permitted productivity gains ranging from 9 to 26%, depending on stem size, compared with the head's productivity when processing a single tree at a time. The delimbing quality was good, and more than 90% of the logs had a length within 10 cm of the target length (3.15m).
